TIP – One FREE Tommy Burger For Every Year

tommy On May 15, 1946, Tom Koulax opened a chili burger and hot dog stand on the northeast corner of Beverly and Rampart Boulevards. The key to Original Tommy’s initial success was its proximity to Belmont High School; the local student body was the core of his original clientele and employees. Now expanded to hundreds of locations and thousands of loyal customers, the original stand on Beverly is still going stronger than ever.

So just a little heads up… according to Original Tommy’s Facebook status today, you might wanna stop by 2575 Beverly Boulevard for lunch today and say a few magic words:

“Today is the Shack’s 64th birthday. At the Shack only from 12 noon till 1 PM we will give free chiliburgers to the first 64 people that say Happy 64th Birthday. The big party is next year when the Shack turns 65, it will be BIG.”

Here’s a lil’ of my family lore,

My Grandma Jessie(RIP)used to tell me how my grandpa Tony(RIP) & her would take trips up Highway 2 to the San Gabriel Mountains in the late 30′s early 40′s. Along the way and at the base of the mountains, I guess in La Cresenta, they would stop and eat “chili” burgers at a cafe that the owner, Tommy, would make. They befriended Tommy and later found out that he was going to open up a stand on Beverly & Rampart which was 4 blocks near their home. Low and behold that’s what we refer to as the Shack now. My Grandma also told me that Tommy offered to a fellow WWII vet friend of my Grandpa & him, the opportunity to become investors for Tommy’s new endeavor. Sadly they passed not knowing how popular Tommy’s burgers would become. Oh well, writing this story has made me crave some. Got to go get me ma free burger now.

I eat at the Burbank Tommys at least once a week and have been going there for the past 20 years. It’s a shame I’m going to be out of town for this promotion or I’d be all over it.

I’ve been going to Tommys for many years. Tom Koulax used to give ex cons a break by hiring them at his famous burger stand. That type of generosity is good enough for me to be a long time fan. Happy 64th….

    Hundred’s of locations? Tommy’s website shows 33.

I believe there may be other locations that aren’t listed on their site. I got the “hundreds” comment from somewhere… or I could just be wrong but I usually make sure I got it from somewhere.
