ADVENTURE – The Giving Tree
Fellow HLA Facebook fan Taylor says she has a fun little treat for you twirling canyon explorers out there…
CLUES AND DIRECTIONS:
- Off of Franklin turn left on Canyon Rd. or right depending on which way you come from….
- Follow Canyon Rd. until you reach the gates to Griffith Park. Keep driving until you can’t drive any further…
- Start walking the trail…
- You are on the right track when you pass the dragon on the right. Kudos to the artist…
- Keep on past the potential kickball field on the right…
- Ahead you will see a small brook…I don’t recommend drinking the water.
- Follow the path as it winds around…if you look up you will see the Hollywood sign…admire.
- Keep walking but go slow because the view is quite pretty.
- The trail seems open at this point but keep going… just as you go around another corner on the right, on the side of the cliffs edge you will see a tree…the branches are overgrown and touch the trails path. Look for the red box and you have reached “The Giving Tree”…
- Give it your thoughts and prayers or anything laying heavy on your heart. Then twirl… Peace and Love! Taylor ;-)
Just remember… the joy is in the journey, not the destination. We haven’t followed the directions to find the box ourselves, so please let us know what you find if you do! (And whatever you do, *please* don’t litter along the way.)

Details: “Yesiree, it’s that ripe time of year again! Making jam and getting into sticky situations with Fallen Fruit collective is one of our favorite summertime traditions! Bring along your home-grown or public fruit and any clean, empty glass jars you have. At the end everyone will leave with a jar of communal jam. If enough people bring surplus, even the empty handed will leave with jam. Vats of fun for all!
The kinds of jam we make will improvise on the fruit that people provide. The fruit can be fresh or frozen. Fallen Fruit will bring public fruit. We are looking for radical and experimental jams as well, like basil guava or lemon pepper jelly. We’ll discuss the basics of jam and jelly making, pectin and bindings, as well as the communal power of shared fruit and the liberation of public fruit… Thanks very much to Slow Food LA for their help in funding this event!”

The main guideline is this: if you don’t have a sense of humor, don’t do the Doo.
“Back in the Spring of 2002, after a day of frustration at local breaks known for aggro-vibes and hostility, four local Surfers decided the best way to get surfing back to it’s pure and fun origins was to go the extreme of laughing at ourselves. Three short months later in June of 2002, over 30 Surfers showed up in costumes rangings from nuns, to business men, to bumblebees. Ever since Doo Dah Surf 2002, each ensuing year has seen attendance double as well as increased recognition from media to documentaries. Why: Because it’s great Sunday fun to mow down swamp turtles with a paddle boat! Oh, and it’s also cool to raise money for the kids of 826LA. *PLUS* there are PRIZES and goodie bags involved! Wheeeee!
Details: “On Sunday, July 26, 90 paddle-boaters (45 teams) will meet for the second annual 826LA Echo Park Lake Paddle Boat Regatta. These fearless navigators will brave the elements, the geese, and each other as they race through (the possibly monster-infested) Echo Park Lake to earn the title of World’s Best Paddle Boat Racers and to raise funds for 826LA. Teams pre-register online, then solicit donations from friends, family, significant others, passers-by on the street, and large corporations—all to secure a better starting position.” Registration and fundraising for the Regatta closes midnight on July 24th.
GO OUTSIDE! – The Big LA Parade
Two Days – 40 Miles – 100+ Stairways. Who says nobody walks in LA?
What: Big Parade LA 2009 – Walk a little, walk a lot… it’s up to you.
Where: First meets at Angel’s Flight Stairway, Downtown. Then moves… as parades are wont to do (they have an itinerary and will be twittering their progress so you can meet them along the way)

Details: There is absulutely NO better way to get to know Los Angeles than to get out of your car and hit the pavement. I’ve been doing that a lot lately and it’s shocking all of the things you can discover. Rather walk in a group? Well, here’s your chance… join a big walking community this weekend for all or just a part of THE BIG PARADE, a 2-day, 40-mile, 135-stairway walk. You’re invited!
Kind of like The Great Los Angeles Walk on steroids, THE BIG PARADE is a group effort, and the brain-child of of local stair explorer, Dan Koeppel. Dan undertook a five-year Los Angeles stair mapping/walking project that began in 2003 with a 47-stairway route through Silver Lake and now he’s mapped out a grand two-day walking even through Los Angeles. “The parade will start at the famous Angel’s Flight Stairway Downtown, and finish with six stairways leading up from Beachwood Canyon to the Hollywood Sign. The walk will cover approximately 40 miles and 135 stairways, and will include a camp-out at the mid-point (legalities permitting), the famous Music Box Stairs – site of the Oscar-winning Laurel & Hardy film of the same name – in Silver Lake. It will take place July 18 and 19th, 2009.”
“A core group of five to eight walkers will be doing the entire event. But – as the name “Big Parade” implies – the true nature of the journey is community-based. In addition to passing dozens of landmarks, we will be joined by community members, both individuals and in groups, as we pass through the city’s most diverse neighborhoods. The walk is broken into specific segments so that walkers of all ages and levels of fitness can join us at specific times (of course, anyone is welcome to meet us at any point along the way – and all are invited to join us at the end to celebrate the walk.)”

I was in Pasadena for a meeting yesterday and decided to walk into STATS FLORAL SUPPLY for old time’s sake… although I have always found them a bit pricey, Stats has been a guilty pleasure of mine for decades. Honestly, it’s kinda like a gory car accident I can’t tear my eyes away from. Yesterday was no exception… not only did I find that after all these years I’m *still* hypnotized by their rooms of animated, overly-decorated, holiday-themed model buildings, but THE STORE WAS DECORATING FOR HALLOWEEN ALREADY!!! In July. I kid you not. Please click on the little image at left to open a photo gallery of some of the crazy goodness I found.

It’s a long-time sentimental fun favorite of mine for silly gift shopping. Wacko is an iconic shop of Los Angeles and I’m thrilled it’s survived when so many other stores haven’t. :)
