Yesterday, thanks to Aquarium of the Pacific & Harbor Breeze Cruises we got a chance to see the largest animal in the world, right off the coast of Palos Verdes… so of COURSE we jumped at the chance! They are debuting a new whale-listening device on their daily boat excursions and invited HiddenLA to tag along. Having never been whale watching in my life, I invited one of our beloved Facebook fans (Cindy and her totally awesome little six year old daughter) to join me on the maiden voyage.
Moments after we ran into a school of playful dolphin, we found ourselves sharing water with a blue whale as promised – one of only 2,000 in existence. It was amazing to realize that the creature I was looking at is larger than any dinosaur that ever existed. Scroll down and check out our photo gallery!

IMAGERY – The Los Angeles Wheelmen
Angelenos have had a passion for bicycling for longer than you might think. The image below was taken in Boyle Heights in 1893, about ten years after the bicycle chain was invented. Reformed in 1945, the Los Angeles Wheelmen bicycle riding club is still going strong, with multiple rides every week. There are far more than eleven members now. And don’t worry, I doubt they’re still wearing that fancy uniform. :)

“We are a group of bicyclists who enjoy the pleasure of riding with friends. We are not a racing club, and we welcome members of all abilities. We offer easier, moderate and difficult rides. We hold some multi-day trips, and in late June we offer the Grand Tour, a 24-hour ride of 120+, 200, 300 or 400 miles. At our social events, we make up for all the calories burned while riding. Our monthly newsletter, “The Gooseneck,” contains a descriptive ride schedule and much other news. Newcomers are welcome to try a few of our rides before deciding whether to join. FOCUS – Self Help Graphics

Many of you may not be aware of this embattled and historic local center for arts activism, but Self Help Graphics in East L.A. was the brain child of several artists including the late Sister Karen Boccalero, an Italian American, chain smoking Franciscan nun who had studied art in Rome. Sister Karen was apparently a force to be reckoned with. According to some who knew her she was loved, feared, reviled and adored, but never dismissed. Sister Karen had the moxy and the vision to tap into the emerging post 1960’s Chicano movement to bring about positive social change and empowerment through print making. The idea that she co-hatched in 1971 in an East LA garage endures as an important safe haven for artists, art students, and community groups. It’s a prestigous training ground for new and emerging print makers, and many artists who started there have gone on to national prominence. (more…)

AY DIOS MIO! – The Lucha Lords
As previously mentioned, many aspects of Mexican culture are very close to my heart… so when Andrew from Lucha Lords invited us to watch underground Mexican Wrestling on Sunday I was all for it. I may be a girly girl in some ways, but I love that stuff.

It was an evening of authentic entertainment featuring exactly what I was hoping for… a variety of (often pot-bellied) men in wacky spandex ensembles and masks playing out testosterone-fueled soap operas and combined displays of pain both very real and very faked. My favorite rivalry was between a large man dressed up like Tweety Bird and his archnemesis, a wrestler who looked like a reject from a community theater production of CATS. (Sadly, Tweety lost.) There are no hipster burlesque shows or fanciness to these events (or English, for that matter)… just Lucha Libre at its core, in a room filled with family members cheering on their favorites (sometimes with a bullhorn).
Hosted in a community hall behind a grungy cafe on 7th Street, Lucha Lords feels like the purest form of the spectacle… and it was easy to forget we were still in Los Angeles. It was 100% pure macho cheesy entertainment and one of the most fun things I’ve done in a while. Thanks Andrew! By the way, if you’re up for the adventure the Lucha Lords generally do their thing on Sundays from 7-10pm, but check the web site for full information.

My grandmother owned a stereopticon, and as a child I was fascinated by it. I still have it, and it looks *just* like the contraption on the right. Basically, during the early days of photography the stereopticon was an invention that helped people of the late 19th century collect the sights of the world without leaving home… a magical machine displaying the most exotic wonders of the world in 3D so people could fantasize about being there in person. 3D may be all the rage when it comes to watching movies right now, but the art of 3D photography is still more amazing to me somehow.
The other day I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jack Laxer who will be showing his master 3D/stereo photography of Modernist architecture at the Getty this Sunday (complete with 3D glasses provided!) . When he was kind enough to offer me the opportunity to feature some of his work on HiddenLA this week, I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it justice but I knew I was up to the challenge. Since I can’t exactly hand out stereopticans to all of you, I decided to try turning them into animated gifs… and it actually kinda works! Obviously the effect will be much better if you go to his Getty event and check out his work in person with 3D glasses on your face, but this’ll give you a taste. One warning though… before you click on the thumbnails below, just please be sure you aren’t epileptic. Oh, and just know if you haven’t had coffee yet, you probably won’t need any after viewing them. ;)

NICE PEOPLE RULE! And so does a good fish taco.
I’m someone who firmly believes that kind behavior should be rewarded and mean people should be kicked to the curb. There’s a misconception about Los Angeles that people here are all self-absorbed jerks who are only out to get each other… and while there were times in my life where I bought that script, I’ve learned over the decades that I was wrong. There are bad people everywhere in the world, and when all is said and done I’ve found the majority of Angelenos to be solid, hard-working, good people who are often far warmer to strangers than you’ll find in many other cities large and small.
I’ve explained many times that the “hidden” in HiddenLA isn’t about being elitist, but rather it’s referring to the heart of this place that many people are oblivious to. In my mind, the good people of Los Angeles are a very large part of that heart.
Sooo, let me tell you a little story. Tonight I was driving through Los Feliz and realized my blood sugar was a little low and I needed something quick. I passed Best Fish Taco in Ensenada, thinking to myself that I’d seen it mentioned many times on HiddenLA’s Foodie page on Facebook. Thanks to too much quality time in San Diego I’m a Baja Mexican food snob, but I decided to put my fish taco elitism aside and give it a try because you guys have yet to steer me wrong. I may have a Team Rubio’s t-shirt in a drawer somewhere, but I wanted to finally taste for myself if these tacos lived up to the hype.
I parked across the street and walked inside. It wasn’t until the customer in front of me stepped away from paying that I noticed the sign saying “CASH ONLY” and realized I had none, just my well-worn check card. I apologized and began to walk away, but then I heard a voice say, “Hey!” a few times. I turned around and the man behind the register motioned me forward. He was owner Joseph Cordova.
YAY – Angel’s Flight is Running!
The historic Angels Flight funicular will resume regular service today, more than nine years after being closed because of a fatal accident.
The California Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday approved the replaced cable system and a new automatic brake system for what has been dubbed “the shortest railway in the world.”
Demonstration rides were conducted Sunday on the hillside track connecting Hill Street near the Grand Central Market to California Plaza on Grand Avenue.
Angels Flight will operate from 6:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The fare is 25 cents. (more…)
ADVENTURE – The Giving Tree
Fellow HLA Facebook fan Taylor says she has a fun little treat for you twirling canyon explorers out there…
CLUES AND DIRECTIONS:
- Off of Franklin turn left on Canyon Rd. or right depending on which way you come from….
- Follow Canyon Rd. until you reach the gates to Griffith Park. Keep driving until you can’t drive any further…
- Start walking the trail…
- You are on the right track when you pass the dragon on the right. Kudos to the artist…
- Keep on past the potential kickball field on the right…
- Ahead you will see a small brook…I don’t recommend drinking the water.
- Follow the path as it winds around…if you look up you will see the Hollywood sign…admire.
- Keep walking but go slow because the view is quite pretty.
- The trail seems open at this point but keep going… just as you go around another corner on the right, on the side of the cliffs edge you will see a tree…the branches are overgrown and touch the trails path. Look for the red box and you have reached “The Giving Tree”…
- Give it your thoughts and prayers or anything laying heavy on your heart. Then twirl… Peace and Love! Taylor ;-)
Just remember… the joy is in the journey, not the destination. We haven’t followed the directions to find the box ourselves, so please let us know what you find if you do! (And whatever you do, *please* don’t litter along the way.)

This week our HiddenLA soiree will be held at the ever-so-nautically-themed HMS Bounty on Wilshire! Ramon has been at the Bounty for over 40 years and especially in this crazy economy he’s looking very forward to our visit… so let’s be on our best behavior and PACK the joint! Where else in town can you sip cheap cocktails and munch on fried food while lounging in red leather booths bearing the names of impressive regulars from a long ago era… customers like Winston Churchill, William Randolph Hearst and Jack Webb? Nowhere else, that’s where!

Be Mine, LA – A Valentine’s Cupcake From Us!

With this site going from 3,000 Facebook fans to now over 100,000 in a matter of days… I can honestly say I’ve never felt so much Valentine’s Day love flowing through this city my life. It suddenly hit me this morning… OUR HIDDEN LOS ANGELES FRIENDS COULDN’T FIT IN THE ROSE BOWL. Yeah, that was about when I had a nervous breakdown, and wished I would get off my butt to get all of you to give me a dollar. :)
Anyhoo, in honor of Valentine’s Day and as a very sincere thank you to our local fans in particular for their support, the very fabulous Vincent at the (very hidden!) Bluebird Cafe in Culver City has kindly offered to help us spread a little love your way. During the rest of February, if you walk into the Bluebird Cafe and tell Vincent that HiddenLA sent you, he’ll give you a free cupcake. Naturally I hope you’ll stay and have other food and maybe a glass of wine or something, but either way. Free cupcake. From us. Try the red velvet.

UPDATE – See y’all at 8pm at Musso & Frank!
Two weeks ago we scheduled our first meetup at the Tonga Hut and 20 people showed up. It went so smoothly and was so fun that it was decided to hold a similar event every two weeks at a classic Los Angeles locale and another was scheduled for tonight at Musso & Frank. Originally figuring it would be another 20 people, last weekend I spoke to Musso’s about reserving a booth or two. Ha ha… that was so last week! On our Facebook invite alone we now have 54 people reserved to come and 54 maybes so those two booths would be a little crowded.
I don’t know how many people to truly expect, especially since a lot of people don’t have Facebook, but Jordan (the owner of Musso’s, who has been awesome!) and I have decided that we’re up for the challenge. Please bear with us if you show up and it gets crowded, we’re going to do everything we can to be ready for you. It’s just a strange situation, having our readership go up about 2,000% in one week. Not something that happens very often or that we were expecting.
Moral of the story, I hope to see you tonight. And if when you see me I look a little tired… well, just bear with me. It’s been a crazy week.
